Hair & Hair Loss
A hair grows out of follicles which invigilate in the epidermis into the dermis. It is made up of protein. Hair grows anywhere in our body except the soles of our feet and hands. It is part of the beauty of a person. A well-kept hair signifies a well-kept being and personality too. Our hair defines our personality and health.
Average hair loss per day is 100 strands of hair. Our hair follicle has a life cycle. It degenerates by the influence of age, disease like cancer, chemicals and others. As we age, our hair grows slowly.
I will explain the different types of hair loss or alopecia.
Alopecia Areata – this is an autoimmune disease which the immune system of the person prevents the hair follicle from producing hair fibers. This is only temporary. There is no definite diagnostic test to detect alopecia areata. The signs and symptoms of this disease are hair loss that usually 90% baldness and patients may complain of tingling sensation and pain on the site. In some affected individuals, return of hair appears after a year.
Alopecia Totalis – This type of hair loss is in advance stage which results to total hair loss in the scalp.
Traction Alopecia – this hair loss is caused by physical stress and tension to the hair like combing every minute, tying your hair too tight and applying too much chemicals. This is just temporary and normal.
Alopecia Universalis – This type of hair loss causes all body hair to fall out (eyelashes, eyebrows, armpit and pubic hair).
Telogen Effluvium – this type of hair loss is temporary. It only causes thinning over the scalp which happens because of changes in hair growth cycle.
Trichotillomania – this type of hair loss can be seen in children. This is a psychological disorder that a person pulls out his hair.
Involutional Alopecia – this type of hair loss is natural in such a way that our hair as we grow becomes thin. Our hair follicles go through a resting phase which makes our hair thinner and shorter.
Some hair loss is caused by emotional stress, hormonal changes, medications and thyroid abnormalities.
Treatment of hair loss depends on the cause of hair loss – it may be due to alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis, involutional alopecia, etc.
In alopecia areata, no cure has been identified. Even hair transplant will not work with this condition because they call this disease as recipient dominant which means that even though you undergo hair transplantation with this condition, it will not still be effective because there is no potential for hair growth.
Some conditions, on the other hand, are prescribed with hair growing shampoos or shampoos for hair fall. For some instance where hair growing shampoos or hair fall shampoos are not effective, they are advised to undergo hair transplant.
Overview of Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is a surgical procedure that improves the hair condition to improve baldness. This procedure moves hair from thick area growth to bald areas. This is to improve confidence from a person who is depressed due to bald scalp. This does not create new hair; it only transfer or moves hair to the bald area this is why this is not effective to other conditions like alopecia areata.
This can be done in doctor’s clinic. For some doctors they have a special room for hair transplantation. Only doctors who are specialized in this field like a dermatologist can do hair transplantation.
Before you decide to undergo this procedure, the advantages and disadvantages will be explained by your doctor. Once you have agreed with your doctor, you will be scheduled for your procedure.
This is a surgical procedure so an anesthesia will be given. The anesthesia will help you to relax for you not to feel any pain while the procedure is ongoing. You will be the one donating your hair. An area in your scalp that produces hair will be incised using a scalpel knife 0 this is called the donor area. Each hair is removed individually then will be transplanted into the bald areas of your scalp. Then it is cleaned and the procedure is done.
Post operation procedures will be explained to you by your doctor like instructions on what you are going to do with your new transplanted hair and medications you need to take such as pain medication and antibiotics. The whole procedure will take about an hour up to two hours.
In every surgical procedure, there are really risks. In hair transplantation, risks are only minimal. These are infections, possible bleeding and scarring. Not all hair transplantation is very successful, successful in such a manner that what outcome you really expected will be the outcome after the procedure. The result of the hair transplant will be seen many months after the surgical procedure. For some, it will take them more than one procedure to be effective.
The cost of hair transplant depends on your chosen doctor who will perform your hair transplant. It varies from each doctor, the hospital and the country where you will undergo hair transplant. The more expert the doctor is, the more expensive the cost of the transplant is. Usually, hair transplant price ranges from $550-$800 per session.
